English Vinglish????

I was looking out from my balcony this morning and saw two young girls playing. They were busy in there own tini-tiny world, when a young boy asked if he could join in. The little girls didn't want an intruder, so the one with long curly hair, made a face and smirked, "NO! Two is company, three is crowd!" The boy was not the one to give up so easily. He smiled a big one, approached the other girl and said, "What about the more, the merrier?" And then realising that there was no other option, all three burst into laughter.

It was a cute sight, but it some how left me thinking. I had always known that "English" is a very difficult and confusing language. Like, if I said, I found the match! You all would be wondering which one until you can actually see that I am watching TV and the match clearly meant some game, not my partner!

But the level of confusion, this language can create is out of bounds. After a thorough research, I realised, not all is good with the proverbs that we use in our everyday lives, because a lot many of them have an exact opposite available to shut you up.

So, today I am going to list down a few of them in contrast with a few more to help you guys be safe from a situation like the girls and the boy playing down below my balcony.

1. Clothes Make A Man vs Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover:
Now, both of these tell us what to make out from the appearance of things around us. While one asks us not to be judgemental about the outer beauty, the other one clearly says that the covering is what makes the inside. I would never know how I am going to perceive anybody or anything after these two phrases.

2. Best Things Come In Small Packages vs The Bigger The Better:
Of course, a diamond ring is a diamond ring and nothing can replace the joy of receiving one. But then, a Lamborghini is also not that bad. So, I guess the above idioms don't contrast each other. They only mean to assert that nothing in a medium size is good or perhaps, only things in medium measurements are good but if you want better or best, go look for small or big packings!

3. Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained vs Better Be Safe Than Sorry:
No explanations required because yeah! I am confused. It all depends on which kind are you. Whether you like taking risks or whether you believe in walking the trodden path. Whether you are the one who looks before you leap or whether you are the one who hesitates and loses. Wait! Did I just confuse you further? Sorry!

4. Actions Speak Louder Than Words vs The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword:
Well, what to say now? It seems like the great people who had been working day and night to give the prized proverbs to the world were at logger heads with each other. I mean, how on earth do you explain such contradictory phrases? So, next time you want to prove yourself, you will have to write down all that you are going to do but remember, under no circumstances, you are allowed to use a sword!

This is not an exhaustive list, but I do hope it has made you think too. So, don't forget to comment below, what you think about the confusion these phrases have created in our lives and also tell me if you know of more.

At the end, I just wish you all live a happy, healthy and successful life. In short, the life you make it. Till then, what is there in the destiny, will happen!! Oops!

Waiting to hear from you people.
